Public works personnel and community leaders took a tour behind the scenes of ongoing West County Connectors project activity as part of the quarterly Stakeholder Working Group meeting Thursday, June 27.
Senior Community Relations Specialist Sarah King took participants to the site of the Seal Beach Boulevard bridge reconstruction that crews are rebuilding one half at a time to make room for additional lanes on the San Diego Freeway (I-405).
Stakeholders watched as crews prepared for the first of several concrete pours that workers would begin the following night, Friday, June 28, and looked inside the framework that crews ultimately will transform into the deck of the future bridge.
Once crews complete the first phase of construction at Seal Beach Boulevard later this fall, traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed west half of the bridge, with two northbound and two southbound lanes.
This will be the configuration during the next year as crews work to reconstruct the east half of the bridge.
Just like the west half, the east half of the Seal Beach Boulevard bridge will take approximately 12 months to complete.
When the bridge is completed in mid-2014, it will be several feet taller and twice the size of the original structure, with four northbound lanes and three southbound lanes.
