More than 200 years ago when the mission in San Juan Capistrano was first constructed, it would take days for visitors to travel from Santa Ana to South Orange County. Today, thanks to the convenience of modern rail, it takes less than 30 minutes.

That’s what a group of more than 350 people did Saturday, June 8, when they rode Metrolink to the birthplace of Orange County for a day filled with local food and fare.

OCTA teamed up with Metrolink to promote train transit, encouraging riders to explore, shop and eat in some of San Juan Capistrano’s most historic areas.

"Metrolink is providing an alternative source of transportation that will be really helpful," OCTA Director and Tustin Mayor Al Murray said. "We hope that everyone in this area will utilize Metrolink and head out to San Juan Capistrano today."

Murray joined San Juan Capistrano Mayor John Taylor, Mayor Pro Tem Sam Allevato and members of the city’s chamber of commerce and other business leaders to welcome the riders at the Santa Ana station.

Nothing Bundt Cakes provided free refreshments while the band Headshine performed live music. Participants also had the opportunity spin a prize wheel and win gift certificates to San Juan Capistrano restaurants and entertainment venues as well as free Metrolink passes to return another day.

"Today, we rode the Metrolink from Santa Ana just to show how easy it is and comfortable to take the train," Taylor said. "With Ortega Highway currently under construction as we work to build a brand new bridge, we partnered with Metrolink and OCTA to help bring people here. There's some incredible places to visit in San Juan."

Families explored one such place at the historic Mission, where a live mariachi band provided entertainment as people tried their luck panning for gold and making adobe bricks by hand. Adding to the ambience were performers of the city's authentic Wild West group "Spurs and Satin," who roped in the growd with their lasso tricks and period costumes.

In the historic downtown, people enjoyed lunch at Sarducci’s before visiting Zoomar’s Petting Zoo. At the end of the day, families relaxed with free coffee and dessert at Rick’s Café.

"I encourage you to take the Metrolink train to the historic train station and see the great things happening in San Juan Capistrano," Allevato said. "Come down, take the train, and spend the whole day down here."
